This one is something of a spoof of the George Romero film, paraphrasing Leonard Maltin, and all in all a hilarious, scary film. If you haven't seen a zombie film before this one is a great one to start with, good luck finding it though, its been discontinued. You'll find R.O.T.L.D. 2 all over the place, but its not the same film. Once you have seen it you'll be tempted to add to your enjoyment by watching the sequel, a mistake I made. The sequel just doesn't have what the original does (maybe its because Dan didn't return) even though both James Karen and Thom Mathews return, kinda cool since they died in the first one. The latest instalment R.O.T.L.D. 3 almost redeems the second, this time though the movie focuses more on horror than the mixture of horror with humour.
A horror classic that I could watch again and again, I give it 8/10
This is definitely my favourite zombie film, nothing else is half as entertaining. Mind you I haven't seen any of George Romero films, even so I can't imagine any of them being as good as this. The writer/director of R.O.T.L.D. (Dan O'Bannon, whose also worked on such hits as "Total Recall", "Star Wars" and "Alien") did a wonderful job of combing punk rock with zombie horror. Speaking of the punk rock R.O.T.L.D.'s soundtrack is awesome, outstanding usage of music too intensify a scene.
An interesting thing too note about the low budget film, an estimated 4m, is that quite unconventionally the zombies are smart and fast. They are constantly chasing humans and even manage to trick a few. The film boasts an amazing cast of farily new actors with the likes of "scream queen" Linnea Quigley as punk rocker Trash and Jewel Shephard as Casey. Yes that Jewel, I've heard that she originally wanted the role of Trash, that is until she heard about the wardrobe.

Interesting Fact
Original Return was to be directed by Tobe Hooper and produced by George Romero, but Richard Rubinstein of Laurel Entertainment asked Romero to not get involved, because he didn't want people to think this film was part of Romero's "Living Dead" series. Rubinstein even got an injunction trying to stop them from using "Living Dead" in the title. But the MPAA arbitrators ruled in favor of the movies producers.
